12 GATES TO THE CITY

While out walking through a wooded valley side adjacent to the small village of Haligovce, north
Slovakia, I thought I could hear light rain percolating through the tree canopy above me.
Stopping to listen, I suddenly realised that the woodland floor around me was moving.
What I was actually hearing was the sound of thousands of worker wood ants collecting food
and other materials to take back to their nest, which I later discovered was only 20 metres further
up the valley side. I placed my microphones an inch from the leaf litter, and started to record.
