Quivering into your blood night radio

“Quivering into Your Blood Night Radio” was composed during the early months of 2012 and is based on a series of field recordings taken from Union Station in Kansas City. It’s one of my favorite places to visit due to its elegant beaux-arts architecture along side of the robust historical atmosphere that adorns this massive train hub that was utilized extensively for soldier and civilian transit during the early to mid 1900’s. When it was opened in 1914, it was reported to be the second largest train hub in the United States, second only to New York’s Grand Central Station. In 1985, due to a variety of adverse economic conditions, the station was closed and left
vacant and locked up until it was renovated and reopened in 1999. For those interested in
learning more about Union Station’s history, I’ve provided references below.
Alongside of its
history, the building architecture embodies an undeniable spirit and its dimensions give way to
an interesting sound environment, as the ceilings measure 95 feet high within its 100X200 ft.
Grand Hall. When I was recording at the building, there was music playing over the speakers,
ranging from jazz to swing. I’ve often felt that the echo within the space from the musical
backdrop comes across as rather haunting when combined with the sounds of visitors moving
about throughout the terminal. So, this environment has served as the foundation for
constructing this release.
These finalized recordings conjure assemblies of passengers sweeping through platforms amidst
an archival swing of jazz innovators long past to the Kansas City good night, chance meetings of
breath shifting conversation and interplay, and caged, droning silences for nighttime disarm;
an array of complex fleeting events, captured, manipulated, and now quivering into your blood
night radio.
